they continued helping. Afterwards pilots and crew wanted to go and find something to eat (no wonder after an 18-hour flight) and their friendly helpers showed them the way to a good pizzeria.
The local radio had broadcasted the message of their fellow workers and at their arrival in the pizzeria a note was waiting for them: the marker had been found! Crew and helpers drove the 20 km back, the observer measured the distance between the marker and the goal, and thèn they could finally sit down to enjoy a hearty meal...
So ... if you have a 'lost marker', it is always wise to contact the local radio station ;-)
